Safari Series: A Typical Schedule for Your Safari Experience
A Day in the Life on Safari
Safari life is all about the game drives and spotting wildlife. Typically you have two drives each day - one in the morning and one in the early evening. Of course you always have the choice to skip them, but you’ll never find me doing that.
Après-game drive, cool off with a dip in the pool or relax with a massage. Take a long bath in the shade or take that nap you never get to take. Or if you’re the active type, continue your safari adventure by foot or bike, depending on where you are staying.
This schedule will give you an idea of what a day on safari looks like -
5:30am: Wake up call. Not sure what to wear on safari? Check out my packing tips here.
6:00am: Morning tea in the main lounge. I’ll have an energizing ginger or jasmine tea. It’s still too early for me to indulge in the delectable sweets lined up.
6:30am: Set out on your morning game drive.
8:00am: Bush break. Tea and coffee (spiked with Amarula if you wish) is served alongside homemade treats on the hood of the safari vehicle.
9:30am: Arrive back at the lodge filled with adrenaline after your exciting sightings. Now have your formal breakfast. A generous buffet or an a la carte meal awaits.
10:15am: Free time. Have a little siesta or read a book. Perhaps book a massage.
12:30pm: Lunch time.
1:00pm: More free time. Go on a walking safari or learn archery. Visit a local community. Simply relax in your gorgeous room and read a book.
3:30pm: Head to the main lounge and fuel up for the afternoon game drive. The bar is always open on safari, so I’ll have an iconic Gin & Tonic, as will most other guests.
4:00pm: Depart on your afternoon game drive.
5:30pm: Sundowners in the bush. Have another G&T and some snacks as the sun sets.
7:00pm: Arrive back at the lodge and freshen up.
7:30pm: Be wowed by a lantern-lit dinner in the boma. Share stories with other giddy travelers around the fire. Watch traditional dancers and musicians proudly show off their passion. I’ll join the dancers, along with a few other spirited guests, capping off the night with full cups and full hearts.
*** Count it - yes that’s 7 meals in one day. You will not go hungry or thirsty on safari.
The connection to WiFi may be weak, but the connection to yourself and the land will be strong. African safaris are alluring, dream vacations. Once you go, you’ll fall in love with safari life and will want to go back again and again. I can promise you, the wake-up calls at the crack of dawn and the late nights star-gazing are worth it.
“If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on safari once again.” - Karen Blixen
Adventure awaits.
