Exclusive Escapes: Epic Romantic Hideaways Around the World
When I envision a romantic hideaway, I dream of seclusion, breathtaking vistas, and gorgeous rooms that set the mood. I imagine picnicking on private beaches, hiking in enchanting forests, and biking through sun-drenched vineyards. Though different, island getaways, mountain retreats, and wine-country havens can all be romantic in their own unique ways. Ultimately, they all offer an escape from your day-to-day reality and provide you with the time and space to be present with your love.

Amankila - Bali, Indonesia
Amankila s a remote hideaway up a winding hill on the East Coast of Bali, an hour away from the crowds of backpackers and partygoers. Tucked within a lush mountainside overlooking the Lombok Strait, Amankila means “peaceful hill” and it truly exudes a sense of tranquility. It’s perfect for discerning travelers seeking an exclusive escape in paradise.
Concrete stilts support the elevated walkways which link the 34 suites to the main complex. Mango, coconut, and frangipani trees line the paths, and their fragrances fill the air. The massive suites have authentic ylang ylang thatched roofs, spacious marble bathrooms, and private decks. Coconut wood, rattan, and bamboo décor create a warm, sensual ambiance.
Reserve a few hours to relax in one of the stylish cabanas next to the iconic three-tiered pool. Visit ancient palaces and lush gardens, enjoy romantic hilltop picnics and bonfire beach dinners, as well as private cooking classes. If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, charter the Aman XII - a 50-foot traditional outrigger equipped with a plush cushioned top deck. Cruise around Amuk Bay and enjoy a light lunch after swimming beside an array of sea life.

Azur Lodge - Queenstown, New Zealand
Escape to Azur Lodge, a chic retreat outside of Queenstown where you can be as active or laid-back as you want. The hospitable staff treat you like a long-lost friend and make you feel like you’re at home... a much nicer home that is.
Nine standalone villas cascade down the hillside backing Lake Wakatipu. The villas are thoughtfully positioned to have dreamy views of the brilliant blue lake, with no neighbors in sight. Enjoy cheeky champagne breakfasts and candlelit dinners in your expansive room or on your private patio. Snuggle by the cozy fireplace and sip some local Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Unwind in the sunken bathtub next wall-to-wall windows that open up to the fresh mountain air. Even better, wait until late night, and shut off all of the lights for some stargazing straight from your tub.
Though you might not want to leave your luxury villa, it’s worth it to explore Queenstown, one of the adventure capitals of the world. Nothing will connect you and your partner more than skydiving! You’ll fall even deeper in love after falling through the sky.

COMO Parrot Cay - Turks & Caicos
COMO Parrot Cay is what private island dreams are made of. It has the turquoise waters, long stretches of sandy beaches, and tropical wetlands that you’d expect from an island getaway. Except what truly sets it apart is the added focus on holistic wellness, spiritual balance, and warm hospitality. The Indonesian aesthetic brings an authentic taste of the East to the West. Touches are weaved into every aspect of your stay; the minimalist, low-lying architecture, Balinese inspired spa treatments, and attentive staff (many who come from Bali) make you wonder if you’re in the Caribbean or time zones away
If you can splurge on a Beach House, it’s worth it. You’ll live like a celeb for a few days, with your 24-hour private butler catering to every need. They are in a prime location, just steps from the beach. Outside there’s a private deck with a heated plunge pool, rainfall shower, stylish cabana bed, and lounge chairs, always prepped with fresh towels. And then there’s my favorite aspect, the screened in patio with the coziest daybed that I need to replicate in my own home.

La Residence - Cape Winelands, South Africa
Set in the foothills in the Franschhoek Valley, La Residence is truly fit for royalty. It is spoiling in every sense and its ideal location allows you to experience the bounties of the Cape Winelands.
With rooms that feature dazzling chandeliers, a four-poster bed fitted with silk sheets, and a lavish bathroom that’s as big as the bedroom, La Residence is what romantic dreams are made of. There’s a palatial feeling to the property, thanks to Liz Biden’s penchant for the luxurious and the opulent. And the attention to detail in the 16 unique suites is impressive - from exotic antiques and Persian rugs to fresh cut flowers and a minibar stocked according to your liking.
Thirty acres of manicured land beguile with its vines, orchards, and gardens. Spend your days onsite wandering around the gardens, curling up with a book in a hidden nook, and getting shockingly affordable spa treatments. Head into the village of Franschhoek to browse boutiques, art galleries, and foodie outlets. Hop on the double decker wine tram which connects eight scenic wine estates. And then to burn off all of the food and wine, bike or hike the fynbos lined nature reserves just a short drive away.
Lizard Island - Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Located approximately 17 miles off the Queensland coast, Lizard Island Luxury Island Resort is the premier accommodation for experiencing the Great Barrier Reef. It’s the Northernmost resort on one of the world’s natural wonders and is the only accommodation in the National Park, promising coveted reef encounters and seclusion.
The untouched nature surrounding the property creates an instantly relaxing environment. 40 suites and villas, decorated with homey furniture, and a palette based on whites, soft browns, and muted blues, contributes to the sense of serenity. With direct beach access, a spacious deck, and a cozy King-size daybed, the Beachfront Suite is my personal favorite room. It’s hard to top an early evening spent lazing on that daybed, watching the multicolored sunset over Anchor Bay.
Take advantage of the complimentary boat transfers to one of the islands 24 beaches or use a courtesy motorized dinghy to discover a sandy cove on your own. Ask the chef to pack a picnic filled with fresh prawns, sushi, and charcuterie. You can snorkel with turtles and enjoy the solitude of an empty shore.

One&Only Palmilla - San José del Cabo, Mexico
Cabo is a dreamy Mexican getaway at the Southern tip of Baja California. One&Only Palmilla is set on a pristine piece of real estate, wedged between the desert and the sea, and has been a legendary resort since the 50s. The resort was originally built in 1956 as a vacation hideaway for the son of the President of Mexico. In the 2000s, One&Only took over the property and expanded its offerings. Though it’s a larger resort with five restaurants, three bars, and two swimming pools, there’s plenty of space to find a quiet, romantic corner. Private moonlit dinners and secluded beach cabanas can always be arranged for the utmost privacy.
Cabo has a little bit of everything to please all types of travelers. Simply relax on one of the gorgeous beaches or charter a boat to cruise by the iconic El Arco rock formation. Keep an eye out for dolphins and whales, as the Sea of Cortez is known for its impressive marine life. When you have had enough of the water activities, head inland to the desert for adventures like zip lining and quad biking. Or play a round at the award-winning 27-hole course designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. If eating and drinking is your thing, One&Only Palmilla has mixology classes, tequila tastings, and foodie adventures to keep you occupied from sun up to sun down.
These properties all bestow a profound sense of place and allow you to relax, reflect, and recuperate - the definition of a hideaway. The sensational landscapes, immersive activities, and idyllic ambiances create extraordinary romantic experiences that you’ll fondly remember for years to come.
