My Top Necessities For Flying
At this point, I could not even count the amount of times that I’ve been on a plane. I’ve been stuck between two large men in the middle seat in the back of Economy, and I’ve also been fortunate enough to have flown in First and Business Class. My flight durations have ranged from 45 minutes to 16 hours; yet, no matter the length, I still make sure I bring a few key items with me to ensure a comfortable travel experience.
Here are my top necessities for both short and long-haul flights:
#1 Invest in a Premium Suitcase
Protect your precious cargo in a premium hard-shell suitcase. I am obsessed with my suitcases - I have the Bigger Carry On & Medium sizes. They have a lifetime warranty as well, so it is worth it to invest. Their suitcases are lightweight, stylish, and durable. Thoughtful features include 360 degree rotating wheels, a compression pad inside which somehow always creates more free space, a waterproof nylon laundry bag, and a TSA approved lock. The carry on suitcases offer ejectable battery packs too, which can be super handy.

#2 Headphones
Headphones are essential. Crying babies and talkative neighbors make it nearly impossible to relax, so it’s even better if they are noise cancelling. Catch up on new movies or jam out to some music with your favorite pair. Make sure you have headphones with a cord if you plan on utilizing the inflight entertainment system as you will not be able to connect via Bluetooth.
I personally prefer in-ear headphones rather than bulky over the ear ones when trying to sleep with a neck pillow.
Tip: listen to a guided meditation or spa sounds to ease any flight anxiety.
My husband is a huge fan of Apple AirPods too.
#3 Portable Charger/External Battery
What’s the use of your headphones if your iPhone - which plays your music - loses its juice? I’ve learned this the hard way. I assumed my 5 hour flight would have an in-seat USB port and a personal tv screen, so I did not bother to charge my phone at the gate. The aircraft didn’t have either. My phone died 20 minutes into the flight and I was left no electronic entertainment... a rough feat to conquer these days.
#4 Reusable Water Bottle
Though you are not allowed to bring a bottle full of water through airport security, you may bring an empty bottle. Fill it up after you go through the check-points, drink at least one bottle, and then fill it up again before boarding. The little cups of water that the flight attendants hand out are not enough to combat the dehydration that occurs mid-flight. Your body will thank you for staying hydrated.
#5 Toiletry Bag/Travel Kit
Pack chapstick, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, face moisturizer, cleansing wipes, ear plugs, deodorant, gum, and that pen you always forget in a toiletry bag, so that anything you may need is easily within reach.

#6 Scarf or Sweater
Bring something to keep you warm for the flight. Even if you live in a warm destination or are heading to one for vacay, plan for the plane to be chilly. I always pack a cozy sweater or a large scarf in my carry on.
#7 Cozy Socks
My feet are always freezing on flights so cozy socks are a must!
#8 Inflatable Neck Pillow
Last month I flew without a neck pillow for the first time and I was restless. Now I always triple check to ensure that I packed one, even if it’s a short flight. They make the journey so much more comfortable. If I do not use it around my neck, I’ll use it as a support for my lower back or arms.
Tip - Buy an inflatable travel pillow. They offer the same support as traditional neck pillows, but are much less bulky.
