Los Angeles: The Best Places to Watch the Sunset
“The sun may rise in the East at least it settles in a final location…”
I've chased sunsets all over the world, but not many places can compete with California. There's something magical about the way the blazing ball of fire slowly melts into the horizon as it sets for the evening. The unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean, paired with a perfectly comfortable temperature, allows for an incredible sunset experience.
I spent a few days in Los Angeles last week, so I had many opportunities to watch the sun set over the West Coast.
#1 While Catching Waves
Though it's not accessible to everyone, my favorite way to view the sunset is on a surfboard in the middle of the ocean. Last Sunday night, I went surfing at Third Point in Malibu. As a novice surfer, it was a feat just to get past the break. Then, actually attempting to ride the 8-10 ft waves proved to be even more of a challenge. Getting continuously owned by waves was defeating, but in between the sets of waves, there was a starkly contrasting sense of calm. During those minutes, I was able to sit on my board, relax, and observe the orange sky transform into shades of purple and pink. The fading daylight, along with the stillness of the ocean, created a blissful state of serenity.. until the next wave rolled in.
#2 Rollerblading from Santa Monica to Venice
If you prefer to stay on land, yet still want to fit in some type of physical activity, I recommend rollerblading from Santa Monica to Venice. There are many rental shops near the Santa Monica pier that lend out rollerblades for about $7 an hour. It's such a fun way to get in some exercise and giggle at all of the characters that live in Santa Monica and Venice. It takes about a half hour to rollerblade from the pier to the skatepark in Venice, which is an awesome place to turn around. Spend a few minutes gawking at the talented skateboarders while the sun begins to set. Make your way back to Santa Monica on the winding palm tree lined path in time for sun down. The bright lights of the ferris wheel and rollercoaster on the pier is a gorgeous sight that you do not want to miss.
#3 Grab Some Rooftop Drinks & Nibbles
The laziest option, which is still a great choice, would be to watch the sunset at High Rooftop Bar in Venice. Lounge on the comfy couches with a group of friends and sip on some fresh cocktails as the sun sets. The bar has an unpretentious vibe and an unbelievable 360 degree view of the Californian coast. Maybe you'll even be lucky enough to spot a celeb like we did!
