The Best Pizza Places in Philly
Philadelphia’s pizza scene is legendary. Old-school Italians and inventive newcomers make drool-worthy pies, rivaling some of the best in the world. One of my closest friends Taylor, a true pizza connoisseur, has put together a list of the top pizza places in Philly. This is a well rounded pizza adventure, from the Northeast down to South Philly, and everywhere in between.
NORTH / NORTHEAST PHILLY
Pizzeria Beddia
What started out as a small pizza shop on the outskirts of Northern Liberties, Pizzeria Beddia has grown to have a massive cult following and a new(ish) restaurant in the heart of Nolibs. Beddia is know for their simple menu of high quality pizzas. Try to get a pie (if you can!) and pair it with one of their many wines they offer.
Pizza Shackamaxon
Pizza, also known as Pizza Shackamaxon, took over where Beddia left off. The new guys in the old spot, Shackamaxon cranks out massive slices of pizza and top notch tomato pie. They are walk-up only, so if you want a whole pie, be prepared to wait for it to be made fresh. They sling their slices all day long if you want a quick bite!
Tacconelli’s
No Philly pizza list is complete without Tacconelli’s. A cornerstone of the Philly pizza scene, Tacconelli’s makes their thin, crispy pies in a generations old oven. To dine here, you need to reserve your dough ahead of time, and I recommend ordering more then you think you need. Their pizza is easy to eat, and amazingly delicious.
Four Sons Pizzeria
A hidden gem in Fishtown/Kensington. They have every specialty pizza imaginable and then a few more on top of that. The Margherita pizza does not disappoint with plenty of fresh mozzarella on a thin but chewy crust.
Vince’s Pizzeria
Vince’s is a true Northeast staple. Vince’s has perfected their thin crust, sauce on top pie. They roll their dough thin, top it with sliced mozzarella, and ladle their rustic sauce on top. Their pizzas come out of the oven piping hot, with the cheese poking through the sauce.
Cafe Carmela
Carmela is fairly new to the pizza scene, but they hit the ground running. Located in a quiet shopping center in the Northeast, their pizza and fresh made pasta make an amazing dinner.
Circles + Squares
What would this list be without the king of racing stripes? Sign up ahead online for this pizza or check out one of their satellite kitchens for easy ordering.
WEST / NORTHWEST PHILLY
Pizza Jawn
Pizza Jawn started out small, moved his kitchen during the spring, and has since opened up a shop on main street in Manayunk. These pizzas are hard to get but worth it, so make sure you have your alarm set to sign up each week. Walk ups are limited.
Founded Pizza
On the border of East Falls and North Philly, you’ll find Founded Coffee and Pizza. They have a large selection of specialty pizzas and toppings, so there is something for everyone.
Benny Casanova's
Bennys is brand new to the Philly pizza scene. Operating out of a ghost kitchen near the zoo, Chef Becker, the owner of Benny Casanova’s, is making super fresh square (well, actually rectangular) pizzas. Their menu is limited, but that just allows for more love and attention to be given to each pie. The perfect final touch: the entire sprig of basil that comes with each pie.
CENTRAL PHILLY
Pizzata Pizzeria
What makes Pizzata stand out is their incredible sourdough crust. The pizza is unique enough to stand out, but still feels familiar.
NYPD Pizza
One of my favorite places to grab a Siclian slice in the city. It is located right near Jefferson Hospital and the newly redesigned Market East shopping district.
SOUTH PHILLY
Angelo’s Pizza
If you haven’t heard of Angelo’s yet, you’re living under a rock. Call ahead and bring your cash. Order one of their delicious sandwiches too for a full meal.
Santucci’s
What May look like a tomato pie is hiding a secret. Under the blanket of sauce is slices of mozzarella cheese waiting for you to capture the perfect cheese pull picture! The Santucci family has been in the pizza game for generations, and has since branched off into a few different spots. Each neighborhood has their own, and each will claim theirs is the best. Our tip for the best pizza is to order extra sauce!
Stogie Joe’s Tavern
A Passyunk Ave staple, Stogie Joe’s serves amazing pies along with other awesome dinner options. Fun fact: they are related to Santucci’s!
Square Pie
Square Pie is also located on Passyunk Ave. The sauce is amazing, the crust is crispy but fluffy.
Emmy Squared
What started as an NYC spot has grown to have multiple locations. Come for the Detroit style pizza, but don’t forget to try the rest of their amazing menu.
